Dr Handoo Rhee is a urological and transplant surgeon at Greenslopes Private Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital and Gold Coast University Hospital.
His surgical interests include robotic surgeries including robotic prostatectomy, adrenalectomy, nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy and pyeloplasty. He performs a number of procedures robotically, open, laparoscopically and endoscopically. Other interests include management of benign prostate enlargement and kidney stone disease.
As a senior lecturer at the University of Queensland and the supervisor of training through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ), he is officially involved with supervision, mentorship, and teaching of medical students, specialists, specialist trainees and fellows.
Dr Rhee began his clinical and research career in the field of pharmacy and chemistry through the School of Pharmacy. Since then, he progressed to obtain medical and surgical qualifications, including MBBS (UQ), FRACS (Urol) and PhD in the field of advanced genito-urinary oncology. He was the research and clinical fellow at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in 2014-2016 with training in robotic surgery, complex open and laparoscopic surgeries including transplantation and organ procurement. He has an established track record in running clinical trials, having completed multiple investigator-initiated trials. Successful research grants have come from numerous funding bodies including NHMRC, MRFF, PA Research Foundation, Gallipoli Research Foundation, and several industry bodies.
Dr Rhee currently supervises higher degree students as an associate supervisor at the University of Queensland. His clinical and research interests include immunotherapy, molecular imaging, frailty, and technology in the fields of urological and transplant medicine. He also holds several international and national leadership positions, including serving as an executive board member of the Transplant Society of Australia and New Zealand, an expert member of the Vigilance and Surveillance Expert Advisory Committee of Organ and Tissue Authority, a committee member of Transplant section of RACS, the supervisor of training at Princess Alexandra Hospital, an editor and board member of journals, and past chair of safety and data monitoring board for clinical trial companies.
